Celtic Hits Review on The Casket.ca
Celtic Hits review in the Life section.
This is the link http://www.thecasket.ca/Fraser explores Celtic roots
Posted on July 16, 2014 by Emily Hiltz emilyhiltz@thecasket.ca

Antigonish native Leela Barbara Fraser has
released a Celtic CD featuring traditional Scottish and Irish melodies
as well as poems Fraser has composed melodies to. PHOTO: Submitted
An Antigonish native who has produced her own Celtic CD is distributing her music throughout the Antigonish area.
Leela Barbara Fraser, who now lives in British Columbia, grew up
with Celtic music in her home. Fraser’s mother sang in Gaelic choirs and
performed musical theatre and her father played the bagpipes.
Though Fraser said she drifted away from Celtic music as she grew
up – studying classical and jazz at StFX and eventually performing
eastern and relaxation music later in life – she has come back to her
roots with this CD.
“Basically because I was exposed to other styles I lost the style
that came naturally to me and I really didn’t know what suited me so I
tried many other things,” Fraser said.
After being given the opportunity to make the CD Fraser was unsure of what style she should record.
“I found that I always, whenever I did think of songs to sing, I
would usually sing Celtic songs or songs with Celtic melodies. That’s
what came naturally to me,” Fraser said. “I started to record it and I
was stunned that it actually suited me. It was the first time I actually
heard my voice sing it.”
Fraser chose many of the songs for the CD based on songs she heard growing up.
“You used to hear on the radio station all these songs quite
frequently throughout the day as opposed to now when it’s just on Sunday
nights,” Fraser said.
The CD features traditional songs like Danny Boy, Skye Boat Song
and Amazing Grace as well as poems Fraser has put melodies to. Fraser
chose the song Scotland the Brave for the CD because she believes
because it is a traditional bagpipe tune it’s not often you hear the
lyrics.
“What I wanted to do was create something that was appealing to all
of Canada. The influence of world music a bit, maybe you would say,”
Fraser said. “I brought back the traditional melodies and kept them
pretty much intact.”
Fraser said she has always wanted to do something for herself, which is what inspired her to do this.
“I will not die with my music still in me,” Fraser said, quoting
Wayne Dyer. “I thought if this is all I ever do I have to do the thing
that comes naturally to me.”
While making the CD Fraser said it helped to build up her
confidence. She didn’t tell anybody, even her family, she was creating
the CD because she wanted it to be a surprise when it was completed.
“It has actually taught me to be consistent with things and to
stick with something you really feel in your gut and never give up no
matter what,” Fraser said. “Follow your heart and be more open in going
with the flow.”

Lyrics to Isle Of Inisfree by Celtic Angel on album Celtic Hits
Download Isle of Inisfree on iTunes
I've met some folks who say that I'm a dreamer,
And I've no doubt there's truth in what they say,
But sure a body's bound to be a dreamer,
When all the things he loves are far away.
And precious things are dreams unto an exile.
They take him o'er the land across the sea
Especially when it happens he's an exile,
From that dear lovely Isle of Inisfree.
And when the moonlight peeps across the rooftops,
Of this great city, wondrous though it be,
I scarcely feel its wonder or its laughter.
I'm once again back home in Inisfree.
I wander o'er green hills through dreamy valleys,
And find a peace no other land would know.
I hear the birds make music fit for angels,
And watch the rivers laughing as they flow.
And then into a humble shack I wander
My dear old home and tenderly behold,
The folks I love around the turf fire, gathered.
On bended knees, their rosary is told.
But dreams don't last
Though dreams are not forgotten
And soon I'm back to stern reality.
But though they pave the footways here with gold
dust,
I still would choose my Isle of Inisfree.

Lyrics Mairi's Wedding Celtic Angel
Lyrics Mairi's Wedding
Step we gaily on we go
Heel for heel and toe for toe
Arm in arm and row on row
All for Mairi's wedding.
1. Over hillways up and down
Myrtle green and bracken brown
Past the shieling through the town
All for sake of Mairi.
2. Red her cheeks as rowans are
Bright her eye as any star
Fairest of them all by far
Is my darlin' Mairi.
3. Plenty herring, plenty meal
Plenty peat to fill her creel
Plenty bonny bairns as weel
That's the toast of Mairi.

1. By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomon'.
where me and my true love were ever wont to gay
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
Chorus
O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll take the low
road,
An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
2.
Twas there that
we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomon',
Where in purple hue the Heeland hills we view,
An' the moon comin' out in the gloamin'.
3.
The wee birdies
sing and the wild flow'rs spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleepin';
The broken heart it kins nayhee second spring,
Tho' the wayfu may cease from their greetin'

Lyrics Eriskay Love Lilt on album celtic hits by Celtic Angel
Vair me o- ro van o
Vair me o- ro van ee,
Vair me o ru o ho
Sad I am without thee.
1. When I'm lonely, dear white heart,
Black the night and wild the sea;
By love's light my foot finds
The old pathway to thee.
2. Thou'rt the music of my heart,
Harp of joy, oh crootch mo chree,
Moon of guidance by night,
Strength and light thou'rt to me.

Driftwood
is burning blue,
wild
walk the wall shadows,
Night
winds go sailing by,
sailing
by the lochie meadows.
On
to the light of day flows Mira's stream, singing:
Caidil
gu la laddie, la, laddie, sleep the night away.
Far
on Beinn Bhreagh's side,
wander
the lost lambies.
Here,
there and everywhere,
everywhere
their troubled mammies.
Find them and fold them deep, fold
them to sleep, singing:
Caidil gu la laddie, la, laddie,
sleep the night away.
Daddy
is on the bay,
he'll
keep the pot brewing,
Keep
all from tumbling down,
tumbling
down to rack and ruin;
Pray,
Mary, send him home safe from the foam, singing:
Caidil
gu la laddie, la, laddie, sleep the night away.

Lyrics of The Dark Island - singer songwriter Celtic Angel
Lyrics of The Dark Island sung by Celtic Angel on her Cd Celtic Hits
Download The Dark Island
1. Away to the westward, I'm longing to be
Where the beauties of heaven’ unfold by the sea
Where the sweet purple heather’ blooms fragrant and free
On a hill-top, high above the Dark Island.
Chorus:
Oh Isle of my childhood I'm dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island
2. So gentle the sea breeze, that ripples the bay
Where the stream joins the ocean, and young children play
On the strand of pure silver, I'll welcome each day
And I'll roam forever more, the Dark Island.
Chorus
3. True gem of the Hebrides, bathed in the light
Like a mid-summer dawning, that follows the night
How I yearn for the cries, of the seagulls in flight
As they circle high above, the Dark Island.

Lyrics Danny Boy sung by Celtic Angel
Danny Boy
Download Danny Boy by celtic Angel on iTunes1. Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.
2. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Celtic Angel Sings Baby Eyes by George Bernard Shaw
Baby Eyes by George Bernard Shaw
Lyrics of Baby Eyes by George Bernard Shaw sung by Celtic Angel
Download Baby Eyes on ITunes

V1. Large Baby eyes smiling joyfully at me,
Baby eyes as brown as can be.
Two deep pools most innocent and bright,
To me are symbols of sheer delight.
V2. May I greet you every single day?
For you are sunshine on my way.
Other people see you smile so sweet,
All are happier when you they meet.
V3. Eyes are the windows to the soul,
No difficulties for you reaching your goal.
So sweet baby go on life's way,
Those Baby eyes have much to say.

Lyrics to Amazing Grace Celtic Hits by Celtic Angel
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear.
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far
And Grace will lead me home.
When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we first begun.

V1
The angels are stooping
Above your bed;
They weary of trooping
With the whimpering dead.
Chorus
I sigh that kiss you,
For I must own
That I shall miss you
When you have grown.
V2
God's laughing in Heaven
To see you so good;
The Sailing Seven
Are gay with His mood.
Yeats stands over the cradle of an infant, noting that the angels, sick of the dead, are also there. God is pleased in heaven, as are the "Sailing Seven" to see such a well-behaved infant. Yeats kisses the infant, sad because he knows that he will miss the baby as it grows up.
Analysis
This sweet, simple poem takes a much more traditional, rhyming form than most of Yeats's work. Rather than being a free-form lyrical poem, it is three stanzas of four lines each, rhyming in the pattern ABAB CDCD EFEF. Each line is two iambs.
The "sailing seven" refers to either the planets, or the seven stars of the Pleiades. They link the child to a cosmic order, suggesting that an infants pleasure not only affects human beings, but resonates with the order of the universe as a whole.
